The U.S. Embassy announced today the launch of niShowPower, a new youth voter registration and information campaign.  niShowPower (“show me your power”) encourages Kenyan young people to take part in their democracy by registering to vote and pledging to refrain from violence.  The campaign will kick off with a free concert at the University of Nairobi’s Chancellor’s Court from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Sunday, May 15.  Top Kenyan artists Juliani, Khaligraph Jones, Octopizzo,  Sarabi, and Sauti Sol will play free of charge to support this important initiative.

Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officials will be at the concert venue to register voters from Nairobi’s 17 constituencies.  Kenyans who wish to register must bring a valid national ID with them to the event.  Information on voting procedures will be available at the concert, including a “mock vote” that walks voters through the poll process.  In addition, civil society groups will have displays to offer young people information about how participate in their democracy.

When he announced niShowPower at the National Youth Summit last week, U.S. Ambassador Bob Godec said that the participation of youth in Kenya’s elections was critical to the future of the country.  “You matter.  Your voice matters.  Register and vote!” said Godec.

Performer Octopizzo said “The vote is the most powerful instrument ever devised… make a choice!”

Important Note:  While the concert is free of charge, everyone who attends must have a valid ticket in advance.  Tickets can be booked and printed on-line at www.nishowpower.com or through the niShowPower Facebook page.  No one will be admitted without a valid ticket.

The Embassy thanks the niShowPower partners for their support, including:  the University of Nairobi; the Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission; Juliani; Khaligraph Jones; Octopizzo; Sarabi;  Sauti Sol; Team Courage, and; GoodTimes Africa.
